La extrema aridez de las zonas altas, donde el agua de lluvia y deshielo se filtra por grietas y sumideros, contrasta con los verdes valles cubiertos por bosques y prados, donde el agua forma cascadas y atraviesa cañones y barrancos.

Existen cinco sectores: el macizo de Monte Perdido y cuatro valles que se despliegan hacia la vertiente española.
